Emīlija Mikalauska - She Fix
TLFC: When and why did you get into racing fixed gear bikes?
EM: Oh, it was something like two or maybe two and a half years ago. I was still at school and living with my grandma (mom was abroad) far away from that school. Two years in a row I was going by two buses and spent something like 3 hours to get there. Quite demotivating! I was passing Chinese shop and I always saw there is one awesome Electra style bike and I really wanted it. Grandma did not allow, cause she thought traffic in Riga is too heavy. I saved some money and mom came back I bought it immediately and was riding all the time. Still bike was around 15 kilos, really slow and I was quite aggressive. I went to my friends birthday party when a friend of mine started to show me videos of Juliet Eliott, his bike.. I tried it and I said.. damn! There is a magic there and I need to get it! I sold that shitty bike and got my first XVZ fixie, tourist, one of the saddest ones but really beautiful. Slowly I learned to ride fast, don’t be afraid of cars.. first steps in minidrome.. first criteriums, then I met She Fix girls who are the same crazy as me and now I can call fixed gear as a sport and extremely big part of my life!
TLFC: Where are you currently living? How would you describe the fixed gear scene in your area and is racing a big part of it?
EM: I am living in Riga, but now I am spending summer in Ukraine. In Riga the fixed gear scene is extremely big. Not like in Berling or NY, but still every year, every month you can see more and more fixed gear riders. Some of them been into fixies 3,4 years ago , some of them are freshmans. But it is awesome to see how often people are making nightrides, criteriums, sprints, fixed weekends, we have our own minidrome.. When Latvians are coming to other countries for minidrome competitions they taking it all! About girls part – 9 crazy She Fix girls are really competitive. People know us and fixed gear scene is becoming bigger every year! Riga is flat and it makes riding more awesome.
TLFC: Tell us about your day leading up to the race. Do you have any pre-race rituals?
EM: Oh, I don’t have any like really serious. But still I am always trying to have enough sleep and don’t be stressed. Sometimes I am talking with my bike (laughing) and cheering him up. And.. I am always eating cottage cheese. Even when going abroad I am trying to get it. I believe it makes me stronger.
TLFC: What bike did you race on?
EM: I am riding Colnago Superissimo bike, quite old one.I got a frame from the bike mechanic who was building bikes for Soviet union bike team. Setup is not serious (remerx rims, weird cranks..), I am laughing about myself all this time, because I am winning criterium with joytech hubs! I don’t know how come they still alive, actually in Stockholm messenger championship I broke a thread on one of it, but still! I am waiting for my new bike and it will be grand. I love this steel frame but I feel that time for aluminum came.
TLFC: How would you describe the course for the Heavy Criterium?
EM: Well, it was hard. Before that we had She Fix jungle race, more for freestyle fixies and with some obstacles, kickers .. riding through water. I was quite tired and when got to know that we gonna ride 25 laps on Heavy Criterium, I thought – not gonna make it! I borrowed Specialized langster track bike, qualified and waited for the main race. I was a bit afraid of those steep corners, afraid to touch the ground with a pedal. But as it was track bike, it was completely allright. And I came first , even kicked ass of some guys!
About Odessa criterium race 3 days ago – it was even more hard. Plus 35 degrees outside and the course was uphill almost all the time. One lap was around 1,6 km and we needed to ride 15 laps. Anyways, finished first but I made it with the biggest effort in my life. Anyway, I believe it worth it all!
TLFC: Did you know many of the riders before the race? Who did you think your main competitor would be?
EM: About Heavy Criterium – yes , I knew. They all are She Fix girls and I know them really well. Elza Ozolina – 16 years old girl is the main competitor.. always. Sometimes she catches me, sometimes I am catching her.. will see how it will be in future.
In Odessa criterium I did not know any girl.. I saw that one had Cinelli track bike and became scared. But still.. it is more about your legs.. not about bike.
TLFC: What was your race plan before the start?
EM: Don’t give up. Ride!
TLFC: Do you have a phrase or song that comes to mind during a race to encourage you?
EM: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. And again, all over again.
TLFC: If you could pick a song to be the soundtrack to a video of the race, what would it be and why?
EM: Kraftwerk- tour de france.I don’t know, it just came to my mind.
TLFC: How did you celebrate for the rest of the night?
EM: Well.. I was dancing and spending time with my friends! It was the end of Playground 3 days festival of all these extreme sports and I knew these are my last days before leaving.
TLFC: Are there any fixed gear racers you look up to or we should look out for?
EM: Yes.. Linda Jakubone, Marika Arro, Hristina Satalova, Elza Ozolina, Viktorija Mezniece, Mianzi Rei, Beate Skvorcova, Elina Teresina..!
TLFC: What are you planning to do next? Do you have more races lined up?
EM: Yes, after Heavy Criterium I made it til Odessa fixed weeked and now I find out there is minidrome, goldsprints and more races in Kiev in two days..
TLFC: Finally, any shout-outs you would like to give?
EM: Do what you love and fuck the rest!

Brooks MT21 Multi Tool
This is one good looking, quality tool from Brooks England. The MT21 features 7 sturdy allen keys (2mm up to 8mm), 3 torx heads, a flat headed screwdriver, 2 cross-headed screwdrivers, 4 spoke keys, a chain tool, a bottle opener, a Brooks saddle spanner and a handy penknife. It is on the larger side and just under 300g, however, so I'm more inclined to keep it in the saddlebag than the jersey pocket. Currently retailing at around £50
Sunn O))) & Scott Walker collaborate for new album due Sept 22nd
The album has been entitled "Soused", containing 5 tracks totalling 50 min of music. Once again Scott has Peter Walsh involved with the production, and the album will be released on September 22nd in Europe (23rd for North America)
Sunn O))) had approached Scott about working on Monoliths & Dimensions (2009), something I would have loved to hear! But Scott declined, only to come back to them last year with new ideas he'd written with this collaboration in mind. The album will be available on CD, digital and Vinyl so bike down to your local record store and pre-order!

Fyxation Fixed Criterium, Chicago, 26th July
"This first of it's kind Midwest fixed gear crit is expected to draw the best riders from the Chicago area and surrounding states. Taking place on the same street course as the Chicago Criterium, the Fyxation Open is a true fixed gear crit and only racers riding fixed gear bikes with drop bars will be eligible to compete. The field limit is set at 75 riders and race spots are available on a first come/first serve basis. Riders can pre-register for $30 by visiting the Prairie State Cycling website. Each rider will receive a commemorative Fyxation Open T-shirt and will be eligible to win over $1500 in cash, prizes and race primes from Fyxation and a host of other sponsors including Chrome Industries, All City Cycles, Red Bull, Nutcase and Abus.
Full race rules are posted on the Prairie State Cycling series website but because this is a winner take all event with no qualifying rounds, we'll be staging CAT 2 and above riders at the front just prior to the race and once the race has begun riders out of contention may be pulled from the race.
Posters have been printed and we are partnering with local bike shops, cycling teams, local and national media to spread the word about this great event. We've also teamed up with former national criterium champion, Olympian and member of Team 7-Eleven, Tom Schuler, to help plan and promote the event.

Kinoko - Important Announcement - Store Closure
"With a heavy heart we have made the tough decision to close our Golden Square Shop. The date of the closure will be August 29. The business has seen a lot of changes over the last few years and unfortunately the move to a much larger space added complications we felt we just couldn’t overcome. We would like to thank everyone who visited our shop and all the customers who put their trust in us to build their dream bikes. We’ve had an amazing time at Golden Square and are very proud of everything we achieved.
Moving forward we will be putting all our efforts into our web site. We will continue to seek out brands, we will continue to work on features, photography and work on projects with talented designers. This will always be a part of what we do.
We’ve had a lot of questions recently about our range plan moving forward. Next season there will definitely be a emphasis on building our performance and casual clothing range but we will still continue to stock hard to find frames and components. We will be discontinuing our complete bike range.
Next season to name a few we will be seeing big new drops from Tokyo Fixed, Mission Workshop and Search & State. We will be welcoming back old friends such as Nari Furi and the Japanese line of Wild Things. And we will be greeting lots of new brands such as Attaqeur and Kletterworks. Please stay with us!
With the closing down of a shop comes discounts. Our sale will be massive. The majority of our sale will be in store only. The sale will be starting next week. More to come on this.
We are aiming to get all custom builds out of the store before we close. For the few projects which will not be complete be Aug 29 we will happily transfer the build onto a bike shop of your choosing.

"We did traffic studies of the area on three separate nights. We believe that heavy traffic will not be a problem. We also went "full speed" on the course with out any cones or people watching the corners. So With a few cones and people helping on turn #3 we'll be in good shape."

Timeline:
7:00 Register and pre ride

Bikes:
Helmets must be worn at all times while riding a bicycle. All bikes must be fixed gear, brakeless,
have dropbars, bar end plugs, and foot retention. Quick releases are allowed for front wheels
only. Horizontal dropouts are not required, but chain tension will be checked on bikes. The use of
GoPro cameras and lights are allowed and encouraged.
Course:
Clockwise around 2600 Lone Star Dr, Dallas, TX 75212.
No permit and on open streets. We are picking a low traffic city block to go clockwise around.
Race:
30 minute race with five laps to go announced. All primes and the final lap will be bell laps.
Lapped riders will be pulled by officials as seen fit. Spectators are encouraged to ride or car pool
to the race since parking is limited.Awards will be given at The Foundry / Chicken Scratch.

New Store - Neil's Wheels Kingston
Neil's Wheels have opened a new store in Kingston and it's just the kind of bike shop the area needs! It's located down Old London Road (kind of opposite The Fighting Cocks) but is set back from the row of shops, so you'll probably need to know what you're looking for to see it. They're quite fixed and BMX friendly and will offer servicing on all types of bicycles including cheap frame swaps, road bikes, mtb, bmx, fixie, hybrids, cruisers, vintage bikes and everything in between!
They're going to be organising some fun cycle speedway post work races down at fairfield park some time in the near future, and some film nights, too. Check out their Facebook page for more info

Dunwich Dynamo 2014 Ride Report
It was my first Dun run and longest fixed gear ride ever, running 52/18. I decided to go prepared for any eventuality which led to a 6Kg backpack after all the tools, food and clothing was packed in.
5 Various filled bagels, 750ml bottle, Bars, Nuun, 2 tubes, Puncture repair kit, Threaded Headset spanner + usual tools, 2 tops + extra socks, SLR Camera, Rain jacket, Lock...
I set off at 5pm to meet up with a PQR & Clockwise on the way. The sun was shining, the ants were taking off from the cracks in the pavement and a crazy humidity meant the sweat was pouring as soon as I moved a muscle. It was a 40Km ride out to the start at London Fields in Hackney, taking in a nice route through Richmond park. Even here the atmosphere was noticeably relaxed, not the usual hell-bent crabon heroes looking for that ultimate 3 lap challenge time cutting you up. We pulled into London Fields around 7:30, grabbed our route cards and a beer and set off around 8:00.
The pace was very mixed on the way out of London and our group of 3 was reduced to 2. PQR Phil and myself were looking to settle around a 15-16mph average, but we had no computers between us and I expect we were well below that at the start due to the sheer numbers on the road. After passing through Epping and some small towns we found ourselves leading a small group. It was dark now and between us side by side we just about spread sufficient light onto the road to comfortably see where we were going. This didn't stop us from taking a wrong turn and leading the group on a small detour. Its a shame it was a detour, we found ourselves in a good flow down the single track lanes cruising in what felt like the low 20mph's. Loosing confidence that at this pace we really should have passed someone we discovered we had taken a wrong turn. Thankfully we had been running parallel to the road everyone else was on, so it didn't take too much correction to put right.
Finally the rain caught up with us which quickly turned into 2 torrential downpours in the space of an hour. We got soaked through, even with the rain jackets on and Phil slid out on a manhole cover. Thankfully no major injury or damage done we were soon on our way only for Phil to hit a blind pothole on a fast downhill left turn and flat his tyre. Whilst Phil was fixing up I went over to shine a light and shout out warnings, but regardless the amount of pinch flats, dropped bottles and accessories grew. Then the worst happened and a rider went down. I quickly pulled his bike out of the road, putting my foot down a water filled hole/ uncovered storm drain and nearly going down myself. a couple of mins later another rider went down. After 15 mins on the phone to the emergency services we was eventually told an ambulance was on its way and the victim had a couple of friends with him so we set off on our way again. I later learned that Warren had fractured his wrist and after waiting 2 hours for an ambulance he was finally taken to hospital by a good stranger.
Once the rain had passed the humidity went through the roof! The air was thick, and every odour seemed amplified from sweet flowers to rotting vegetation and the stench from the farms. I was never to be dry again until we got home, and this played havoc with our comfort levels. Slowly the need to take a short stretch stop and a re-adjust increased with frequency, but so did the need to take on more food and water. Our pace remained good for the majority, taking hills in a much quicker stride than our geared counterparts, although there were a couple of times I felt 76 Gear inches was a bit too heavy going!
As we rode the final quarter the sky began to show some hints of colour again whilst lightning flashed and forked on the horizon. Thankfully this was heading out to sea so we were not destined to get underneath it, but it was a magnificent view. As dawn broke the miles seemed to take longer and longer. 40 miles...38 miles...35 miles... By this point I was loosing the power in my legs and the last 10 miles felt twice as long!
We arrived on Dunwich beach around 6:30, a slight drizzle in the air which quickly passed, and lots of tired faces. We took in the views, a photo opportunity, then to the pub for a breakfast pint.
Next I had to make my own way to Ipswich to get the train back to London. I had deliberately booked a mid-afternoon train so there was no pressure, and headed off up the A12. And there was lots of up! Long, slow grinds, but there were a few others making the same journey which was encouraging. 10 miles in I pulled over to take a break and a couple went past with a decent pace. I foolishly decided to follow, seeing them as a good wheel to pace myself to. 10 minutes later I bonked. I pulled over, drank the last of my water, ate the last of my bagel and hoped it would be enough to get me going again. Thankfully a petrol station was only 5 mins down the road so was able to stock up and slowly made my way into Ipswich town. I collected my tickets with 3 hours to spare. I had already enquired a few days previous if I could move my departure time if I wanted to and was told no, so I found an out-of-the-way corner, pulled my cap down and went to sleep. I was awoken after not too long by a member of staff. He told me they didn't want the station filling up with bikes and sleeping cyclists and hurriedly ushered me onto the next train. Result! A short ride through London and another train later I was home!
I've never eaten or drank so much on a ride, evidence I've been doing it wrong on my long rides so far as I felt pretty good until pushing too hard into Ipswich:

It was a wonderful ride! The weather did make it uncomfortable, and would love to do it under a star lit sky next time (and maybe drop a few gear inches too) Will do again!

RACE FORMAT:
THREE CATEGORIES
Fixed Gear.
Open Men*
Open Women* (minimum 15 participants or women will race with men in the Open Category)
*All types of bikes with at least one brake will be accepted in the men & women OPEN category (fixed, mountain, road, single, etc.).
QUALIFICATIONS
Cyclists are divided into groups and must race a short track for 15 minutes. Each lap is timed, and the best run counts as the qualifying time. The 50 fastest cyclists move up to the finale.
FINALE
Cyclists are placed on the start line according to their qualifying time. Start is indicated with a starting pistol. The race lasts 15 minutes after which a second shot fired.The three first cyclists to cross the finish line win the race. Lapped riders are disqualified.
